What to Expect in the Psychological Evaluation

The purpose of the evaluation is to assess the donor or surrogate’s motivation, stability, support system, and to screen for underlying mental illness or issues.  The evaluation also assesses the donor or surrogate’s level of understanding of medical procedures, time commitment, possible physical and psychological risks, and the impact on their lives.

If they are lacking some of this necessary information, it provides an opportunity to identify what further information is needed, and things to consider before committing to being a donor or surrogate.

For Egg or Sperm Donors

A Clinical Interview with the Donor
This interview lasts approximately one-and-a-half hours, gathers information about the donor’s life history, and assesses the donor’s understanding of the medical, psychological and emotional aspects of the donation process.

An interview with Donor’s Partner or Spouse
This brief interview assesses the level of support and If Donor is known by the Intended Parents (is a friend or relative), the evaluation also includes interviews with the intended parents, and others involved.

For Gestational Carriers and Surrogates

A Clinical Interview with the Surrogate or Carrier
This interview lasts approximately one-and-a half hours, gathers information about the surrogate’s life history, assesses the surrogate’s understanding of the medical, psychological and emotional aspects of the surrogacy process, and how the process will impact her life.  It also helps them identify what further information is needed and things to consider before proceeding with the process.

The MMPI-2 (Minnesota-Multiphasic Personality Interview-2)
This is an assessment comprised of 567 true/false questions, that is administered on a computer.  It typically takes one to one-and-a-half hours to complete.  The MMPI-2 is the most widely used and researched tool to assess for major mental illness and social and personal maladjustments.

An interview with the Surrogate’s Partner or Spouse
This brief interview assesses the level of support and  support level of If the surrogate is known by the intended parents (for example is a friend or relative), the evaluation also includes interviews with the intended parents, and others.
